Google and Thunderbird have updated their software since this post was written.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>TIP:<\/strong><br \/>\nLook at the Thunderbird Add-On called &#8220;Provider for Google Calendar&#8221;.  It takes care of all this crap for you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Before we get started, if you have a personal calendar, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/calendar\/bin\/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=99358#sunbird\">Google  has a quick how-to here.<\/a> The Google tutorial only covers basic calendars.\u00c2\u00a0 This tutorial will cover both personal and shared calendars.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/calendar\n\/bin\/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=99358#sunbird\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Google Calendar is neat and pretty much every phone and app has some sync system that works with it&#8230; except Thunderbird with the Lightning Add-on.\u00c2\u00a0 Actually it does, it&#8217;s just not intuitive.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If you use the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/projects\/calendar\/sunbird\/\">Sunbird stand-alone calendar client<\/a>, the steps are essentially the same, but some menu options may be different.<\/p>\n<p>What you need:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozillamessaging.com\/en-US\/thunderbird\/\">Thunderbird<\/a> (2.x works, but &gt;= 3.01 is better)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/projects\/calendar\/lightning\/\">Lightning Add-on<\/a> (.9x for Thunderbird 2.x, &gt;=1.0b1 for TB 3.0.x)<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/calendar\/\">Google Calendar<\/a> or access to a shared Google Calendar.<\/p>\n<p>What to do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Add the Lightning Add-on to Thunderbird and fire it up.<\/li>\n<li>In the left column your calendars are listed.\u00c2\u00a0 Below them right-click and click New Calendar<\/li>\n<li>Select On the Network, click Next<\/li>\n<li>Select CalDAV<\/li>\n<li>Put in your calendar URL<br \/>\nThe URL of your calendar takes this form:<br \/>\n<code>https:\/\/www.google.com\/calendar\/dav\/[Google Calendar ID]\/events<\/code><\/p>\n<p>In the case of\u00c2\u00a0 a personal calendar, the ID is simply your gmail.com address such as this:<br \/>\n<code>https:\/\/www.google.com\/calendar\/dav\/BigTurnip@gmail.com\/events<\/code><\/p>\n<p>In the case of a shared calendar the ID is fugly, like this:<br \/>\n<code>https:\/\/www.google.com\/calendar\/dav\/utqisjt6b9hoot6i9o2jk1k9qg%40group.calendar.google.com\/events<\/code><\/p>\n<p>To get that string, log in to your Google calendar and go to the calendar settings.\u00c2\u00a0 Down by the XML, iCAL and HTML links there is something like this:<br \/>\n<code>(Calendar ID: SomeBigNastyStringOfJunk@group.calendar.google.com)<\/code><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s your prize!<\/li>\n<li>Click Next<\/li>\n<li>Give your calendar and name, color and an email address.\u00c2\u00a0 Click Next.<\/li>\n<li>Click Finish.<\/li>\n<li>If it doesn&#8217;t seem to work, close and open Thunderbird.\u00c2\u00a0 There is a bug that may cause new network calendars to fail to display right away.\u00c2\u00a0 If it still fails, check the URL from step 5.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Happy calendaring.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Did you find this post useful or have questions or comments?
